Will the Grids Package propel hydrogen infrastructure to the next level?
H2 Talk - Will the Grids Package propel hydrogen infrastructure to the next level?
Examining the European Grids Package: opportunities, governance, and gaps for hydrogen sector integration
15:00 – 16:30 CET
Online Webinar
In December 2025, the Commission published the European Grids Package, which updated rules for the planning, permitting, financing, and operation of cross-sector energy networks. As Europe aspires to have a more integrated and flexible energy system, the Grids Package is essential in ensuring that hydrogen infrastructure expands and evolves in coordination with electricity, gas, and CO₂ networks.
Infrastructure development is essential for meeting ambitious EU targets and ensuring energy system flexibility. Developing jointly the 3+1 infrastructures (electricity, hydrogen, gas, and CO₂) will enable better integration of variable renewable energy sources (VRES), improve system resilience, help manage costs for final consumers and overall, provide a more effective and balanced approach than focusing solely on electricity.
Organised by Hydrogen Europe, this webinar will examine to what extent the package, as it stands, is likely to remove existing barriers, whether its governance and planning choices are fit for purpose, and whether it can effectively deliver cross-sector coupling based on infrastructure needs. The discussion will also explore what is missing for hydrogen as a sector in the current proposal, as well as the remaining gaps that must be addressed to enable genuine sector integration.
