Rule of Law in Hungary
Cities' Resistance to Autocracy
Date
Wednesday 9 July, 10:00 – 11:00
Location
Weiss R3.1 and online (RSVP for link)
Following the organisation of the Budapest Pride – one of the largest pro-democracy events in Hungary in decades – the Mayor of Budapest, Gergely Karácsony, will be in Strasbourg this week.
The event will feature a panel discussion with mayor Karácsony and the (shadow) rapporteurs on the Article 7 procedure against Hungary. The discussion will focus on the role of cities in the fight against rule of law backsliding. The Budapest Pride held on 28 June, which brought together 250,000 protesters in support of LGBTQI+ rights and freedom, will be presented as an example of successful resistance against repression.
Further, the panel will examine the impact of Orbán's autocratic expansion on opposition-led cities and municipalities, highlighting the financial and punitive measures targeting them. It will also address the efforts of municipalities to uphold the rule of law in illiberal democracies and the consequences they face.
