EU Circular Economy Act

Parliamentary breakfast with GJ Gerbrandy MEP, Anna Cavazzini MEP, F. Flachenecker (EU Commission), K. Litke (BNW) and A. ten Wolde (EP.eu)

The recycling and remanufacturing sector in Europe is growing quickly: it is estimated that the European remanufacturing market’s circular potential will grow from its current value of EUR 31 billion in 2022 to EUR 100 billion by 2030, creating 500 000 new jobs.

Despite leading on circular economy initiatives, further progress and investment are hindered by lack of scale and a unified market for recycled materials. While circularity has been identified as a priority in the European Commission’s “Clean Industrial Deal”, the transition towards a circular economy remains hampered by bottlenecks in the markets for circular products and materials.

To stimulate both the supply of quality recyclates and the demand for secondary raw materials, the European Commission wants to address this issue through a “Circular Economy Act” (CEA) and additional initiatives like the establishment of a “Critical Raw Materials Centre” and “Trans-Regional Circularity Hubs”.

Effective measures and incentives, common standards and a reliable regulatory framework would accelerate the development of markets for recyclates and services like repair. The objective is to make 24% of materials circular – and hence reduce the use and dependency of primary materials - by 2030.

On June 12th, the European Sustainable Business Federation – Ecopreneur.eu – and its member association BNW organise a parliamentary breakfast hosted by Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy MEP to facilitate dialogue between business and policy makers on this important topic.

We invite representatives from business and industry, EU institutions, civil society and EU member states to discuss policy measures and mechanisms required to boost the use of recycled content, reuse and innovative waste management practices in a European circular economy.

Key questions include: Which policy measures does the Commission propose to help scale up reuse, remanufacturing and recycling? How will it ensure the free movement of waste for recycling? Will there be legally binding targets for recycled content in new products?

Mr Gerbrandy will be joined by:

  • Anna Cavazzini – Chair, EP Internal Market Committee (Greens)
  • Florian Flachenecker – Team Leader, Circular Economy Act, European Commission
  • Konstantin Litke – Policy Director, BNW
  • Arthur ten Wolde – Executive Director, Ecopreneur.eu

The session will include a panel discussion and Q&A with all participants.
