EP - Women in Transport and Tourism: A New Vision for Driving Change and Shaping the Future of Transport and Tourism Industries
Women in Transport and Tourism: A New Vision for Driving Change and Shaping the Future of Transport and Tourism Industries
📅 Date: Wednesday, 24 September 2025
🕛 Time: 12:00 – 14:00 (CET)
📍 Venue: European Parliament, Room Paul-Henri SPAAK 7C50, Brussels
This high-level policy event, hosted by MEP Elena Kountoura, Vice-Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism, aims to shine a light on the transformative role of women in shaping the future of the sustainable transport and tourism sectors in the EU. Bringing together a diverse audience of policymakers, institutional and industry leaders, civil society representatives, academics, and advocates for gender equality, the event will foster dialogue and promote new visions for inclusive, sustainable development. It builds on the growing momentum among civil society organisations to strengthen gender equality and female leadership across both industries.
Women remain significantly underrepresented in both sectors, despite their vital contributions. In transport, they account for just 22% of the workforce in the EU, with even lower participation in technical and decision-making positions. In tourism, while women represent approximately 54% of the global workforce, they are still largely absent from leadership roles and are more likely to experience precarious or informal employment. These persistent disparities reflect broader gender gaps in the labour market, from unequal pay and limited access to training, to structural barriers that restrict career progression.
The event will focus on addressing these challenges by advocating for gender-responsive employment policies, inclusive training and skills development, supportive social protection systems, and the promotion of women’s leadership. It will also emphasize the importance of reliable data, disaggregated by gender, to drive evidence-based policymaking.
The event is organised with the support of the Left Group.
