About the Event
This event forms part of the European Parliament Gender Equality Week 2025, with speakers including women activists from Iraq, Ukraine and Sudan with interventions from MEPs, EU policymakers, Civil Society representatives and other key stakeholders.
This year marks 25 years since the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security - a landmark commitment recognising women not just as victims of conflict, but as essential actors in building peace.
The global rise in armed conflict and authoritarianism threatens hard-won gains on women's participation, protection, and rights in peace processes. At the same time, shrinking development and humanitarian funding constrains the ability of women's organisations, especially at the local level, to sustain their work and influence decision-making.
The erosion of civic space further limits their capacity to engage in political dialogue and hold institutions accountable. Yet, these challenges also underscore the urgency of reinvigorating the WPS agenda, strengthening local ownership, and renewing international commitment to gender-responsive peace and security.
Building on this context, this roundtable discussion will explore the future of the WPS agenda, focusing on:
Localisation and ownership of the WPS agenda
The role of men and masculinities in advancing peace and gender equality
How the EU and its Member States can renew political and financial commitments to WPS over the next 25 years, especially within the next MFF
