Safeguarding and shaping the future of euro cash
European Central Bank event with Piero Cipollone | 14 September 2026, House of the Euro, Brussels | Future euro banknotes, legal tender and the role of cash.
Safeguarding and shaping the future of euro cash
About the Event
On 23 July 2026, ECB President Christine Lagarde revealed the shortlisted design proposals for the next series of euro banknotes, based on two different themes: ‘European culture’ and ‘Rivers and birds’. Now, everyone in Europe is invited to have their say on the proposals through a public survey.
To underline the shared commitment to safeguard the role of cash in a rapidly changing world, Piero Cipollone, Member of the ECB Executive Board, will deliver a keynote speech discussing the redesign of the next series of banknotes and the strategic vision for the future of euro cash.
Afterwards, the Commission’s Massimo Suardi, Director Macroeconomic Policies (DG ECFIN), and Banco de España’s Alberto Ríos, Director General Institutional Relations, Transparency and Conduct, will share additional insights on the proposed Legal Tender of Cash Regulation and how the Eurosystem ensures cash remains available and trusted in daily life, respectively.
