About the Event


Eurosystem response to the European Commission's targeted consultation on the competitiveness of the EU banking sector will be delivered by Ms Claudia Buch, Chair of the Supervisory Board of the ECB, on Wednesday, 6 May 2026 at 9:30. The presentation will set out the Eurosystem's view on what is needed to make the EU banking sector fit for the future and, ultimately, enable banks to better support the economy. Chair Buch will outline policy proposals to ensure that banks can continue to play their key role. This encompasses overcoming a fragmented Single Market and tackling undue complexity in the regulatory and supervisory framework, while reaffirming the importance of maintaining a strong and resilient European banking system.

Claudia BUCH
Claudia Buch is Chair of the Supervisory Board of the European Central Bank, a position she has held since January 2024. She brings extensive experience in central banking, financial supervision, and economic policy, having previously served as Vice-President of the Deutsche Bundesbank from 2014 to 2023, where she was responsible for key areas including banking and financial supervision, financial stability, and statistics. Earlier in her career, she held senior academic and research positions, including Professor of Economics at the University of Tübingen and the University of Magdeburg, President of the Halle Institute for Economic Research, and Scientific Director at the Institute for Applied Economic Research in Tübingen. She also conducted research at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, where she led work on financial markets and economic reforms. She has been actively involved in numerous international policy forums and advisory bodies, including the G7 and G20, the Financial Stability Board, the Bank for International Settlements, and the European Systemic Risk Board. Claudia Buch holds a PhD and Habilitation in Economics from the University of Kiel, as well as an MBA from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire.
