MEP EVENT - CONFERENCE Making a success of Europe's transition to low-carbon steelRegional opportunities and EU pathways📅 Date:Tuesday, 14 October 2025🕐 Time:13:00 – 15:00📍 Location:Room ASP 5E2European Parliament, BrusselsHosted byChristian EHLERMEPITRE Committee CoordinatorEPP GroupCDU (DE) Ville NIINISTÖMEPITRE Committee CoordinatorGreens/EFA GroupVihreä liitto (FI) Steel production is responsible for roughly 7–9% of global carbon emissions, making decarbonisation of the steel sector a pivotal climate challenge. While technological shifts are already under way, market developments differ widely between countries. This has led to major steel-producing countries pursuing divergent policy paths, which shape the pace and direction of global decarbonisation in the steel sector. As the European Commission prepares the Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act (IDAA), this discussion will focus on how the EU can turn the decarbonisation of the steel sector into a success, how it can strengthen EU competitiveness, and how it can contribute decisively to climate goals. The programme will include policymakers, leading steel companies, and civil society voices, and will conclude with a networking coffee.
