A Political Blueprint for Healthier People and Cities in Europe - The Exposome Momentum

On 1 July 2025, the European Parliament will host a high-level political event dedicated to “A Political Blueprint for Healthier People and Cities in Europe - The Exposome Momentum”.

The human exposome — the totality of environmental exposures individuals experience throughout their lives and how these influence health. This event aims to bring together leading scientists, policy experts, and institutional stakeholders, marking a pivotal step in embedding the exposome within European health strategies, reinforcing the EU’s leadership in proactive and evidence-based public health policy. This event is also the kick-off event for the future creation of an interest group on exposome.

As scientific understanding of the exposome rapidly advances, it is becoming clear that traditional public health approaches must evolve to effectively prevent non-communicable diseases and address the complex interplay between environmental, commercial, and social determinants of health. Healthcare expenditure is among the largest and fastest growing spending items for governments and individuals with an average of 9.1% of GDP in 2020 in the EU countries. The economic burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is rising and expected to show steeper increases in the future. Urgent action is needed to keep public healthcare expenditure sustainable. Further information can be found here.

This event aims to generate strong political momentum to truly integrate prevention into EU public health policies, positioning it as a cornerstone for a more holistic and anticipatory approach to health prevention.

Structured around two key panels, the event will first seek to formulate the problem: “What is the exposome and why do we need a new approach to prevention?”, introducing the concept and its transformative potential in redefining health strategies. The second panel will explore solutions with diverse case studies demonstrating how the exposome is being applied at various levels — local and national — and how these experiences can inform policymaking at the EU level.
